friday foto: the hazards of leadership

[Apologies to all of those who recalled that I promised a follow-up post about passive aggression. I wasn't feeling so hot yesterday and stayed at home to drink liquids and nap.]

Last week I came out of the Eaton Center on to Queen Street and almost stepped on Barack Obama's head.
Sidewalk art outside the Eaton Center isn't new, nor are the Obamas, nor is my fascination with them, but as I took the second photo - the close up - just as someone casually walked across Obama's nose, I was reminded of the nitty-grittiness of leadership.

Recently, Obama has been under fire for health care reforms he's like to introduce in the States, both from Democrats and his own Republicans. Much like any other piece of American news, this debate is controversial, boisterous, heated, and making headlines in our newspapers.

Part of me must wonder: when Obama realized he had won the presidency, was his first thought "Yeay!" or "Crap."? The power, the prestige, the posterity... His face is on international television, on Time magazine, on T-shirts, on Rihanna's pinky finger, he has a bobble-head doll, a Ben & Jerry's flavour, and a Chia Pet.

And his face is being walked over on Queen Street West, Toronto, Canada.

Over the past few days I've been reminded of the words: "With great power comes great responsibility". Not scripture. Rather, Uncle Ben's dying words to Peter Parker, alias Spiderman. Close. In the darker moments of leadership, I've wanted to quit. No, yell at everyone and THEN quit. But then I think of the people I'm helping to lead, and think of all the leaders who haven't quit on me, and I'm inspired to try again.

Even if my face gets walked over.

"Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way."
(Hebrews 13:17:18)
